Rationale

According to its Saussurian conception, linguistics is the discipline that deals with the scientific study of language (Saussure, Meillet, Dubois, Mounin, etc.). It determines the general conditions of the functioning of languages as systems in their different phonetic, phonological, syntactic, morphological, semantic, lexicological, pragmatic…aspects.

Long before Saussure’s CLG (1916), the study of language has undergone a marked evolution from the ancient times to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance; but the factors that have really contributed to the rise of modern linguistics are precisely the openness of this discipline to other branches of knowledge. It is also noteworthy to note the development of historical and comparative linguistics (towards the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century) whose objective is the study of the genetic kinship between languages (Rask, Bopp, Schlegel, Grimm, Schleicher, Breal, etc.). After this period marked by comparative concerns  and the study of the concordances between languages, linguistics has split its objectives by giving birth to several sub-disciplines, meeting the deontological and epistemological requirements of the scientific study of languages.

Therefore, the sub-disciplinary proliferation of linguistics has favored its evolution by drawing on research in other fields such as biology, mathematics, philosophy, physics and psychology’s laws that gave birth to behaviorism, mentalism, mechanism (Watson, Pavlov, Skinner, Bloomfield, etc.), literature with Barthes 1968, Maingueneau 2010, etc. It should be noted then, that it is thanks to this range of non-linguistic theories, but which effectively contribute to the study of the language, that the scientific research on language has been able to  forge an important horizon by giving birth to linguistic schools and trends which have marked the history of thought like structural linguistics (Saussure, Troubetzkoy, Jakobson, Hjelmslev, etc.),distributional linguistics (Bloomfield, Harris, etc.), generative and transformational linguistics (Chomsky), functional linguistics (Martinet), etc.

Today, linguistics opens up to other recent disciplines such as neurolinguistics, language didactics, computing linguistics, etc. In fact, the situation in the 21st century seems more confused than it was a long time ago when the discipline was in a phase of progressive development while trying to forge its links with other fields of study. However, for the sake of being tuned in to the “complexity” of the matter, there seems to be an internal dialogue between the different disciplines mentioned above. Interconnection and mutual understanding of each discipline and approach’ stakes can, in effect, only be beneficial. This has led other modern linguists to seek the adventure and call on specialists in other fields in order to better understand some phenomena related to language. The proliferation of research laboratories bringing together multidisciplinary studies and the increase in the number of research journals and periodicals in several fields have fostered this openness.

This current situation leads us to question the present status of linguistics. How to achieve a homogeneity of linguistic research beyond the fragmentation of its disciplines? How to provide a more legitimate status to the language sciences?

The aim of the colloquium is to highlight the contribution of other areas of knowledge to linguistics via the sharing of specialists’ experiences in the field by presenting case studies and theoretical frameworks on the subject.

Areas of research:

Paper proposals cover both theoretical or practical reflections in relation to the general theme of the symposium. The content of the contributions must necessarily respect one of the areas presented below:

Area 1: Linguistics as an independent science

Study of the internal characteristics of language affecting the phonetic and phonological levels (sounds, phonemes, etc.), lexical level (terminology, lexicons, dictionaries, specialized language, etc.) morpho–syntactic level (sentence, structure, word order, etc.), semantic level (relation son–signification, etc.) and pragmatics (discourse analysis, situations, speech acts, etc.)

Area 2: Linguistics and languages teaching

Foreign language teaching, language learning and acquisition process, current language teaching methodologies and theories (FLE, FOS, etc.), teaching practices, curricula and teaching contents, teaching aids, etc.

Area 3: Linguistics at the crossroads of other disciplines

- Linguistics and sociology: study of the external characteristics of language.

- Linguistics and translation: recent issues and theories of translation.

- Linguistics and literature: contribution of linguistics for the study of literary texts.

- Linguistics and philosophy: philosophical reasoning in linguistics.

- Linguistics and computer science: contribution of new technologies in linguistics.

- Linguistics and neurology: neurolinguistic programming, language disorders.

- Linguistics and psychology: language production, linguistic behavior.

The papers may also propose topics related to linguistics and another area not mentioned among the above research ones, provided that the general theme of the symposium is respected.
